# Set Existing Passwords Warning Age

## Description{% #description %}

To configure how many days prior to password expiration that a warning will be issued to users, run the command:

```
$ sudo chage --warndays 7
          USER
```

This profile requirement is `7`.

## Rationale{% #rationale %}

Providing an advance warning that a password will be expiring gives users time to think of a secure password. Users caught unaware may choose a simple password or write it down where it may be discovered.

## Remediation{% #remediation %}

### Shell script{% #shell-script %}

The following script can be run on the host to remediate the issue.

```bash
#!/bin/bash
# Remediation is applicable only in certain platforms
if rpm --quiet -q kernel-core; then
var_accounts_password_warn_age_login_defs='7'
while IFS= read -r i; do
    chage --warndays $var_accounts_password_warn_age_login_defs $i
done <   <(awk -v var="$var_accounts_password_warn_age_login_defs" -F: '(($6 < var || $6 == "") && $2 ~ /^\$/) {print $1}' /etc/shadow)
else
    >&2 echo 'Remediation is not applicable, nothing was done'
fi
```

### Ansible playbook{% #ansible-playbook %}

The following playbook can be run with Ansible to remediate the issue.

```gdscript3
