Use Bits Chat in RUM

This product is not supported for your selected Datadog site. ().

Overview

Bits Chat is available on every RUM page. Bits Chat uses the page you’re on and what you’re viewing as context, and can query your RUM data alongside your traces, logs, and profiles. Use it to:

Find out why a view is slow

  1. Open a view in the RUM Explorer or in Session Replay.
  2. In the performance section of the view side panel, click Ask Bits.

Bits Chat opens and investigates that specific page load. It reconstructs the view’s load timeline from its resources, long tasks, errors, and user actions, and examines four sources of root causes:

SourceWhat Bits examines
App PerformanceClient-side issues, such as main-thread contention, code execution, and rendering delays.
Third PartyThe impact of third-party scripts and libraries loaded by the application.
Server SideBackend latency and server-side errors that affected the view, using correlated APM traces.
EnvironmentThe user’s device and network conditions.

Bits returns ranked findings with links to the underlying events. You can then ask follow-up questions, such as Is this happening to other users on this page? or Which backend endpoint is the slowest here?

The view side panel with Bits Chat open after clicking Ask Bits, showing ranked findings for a slow page load.

Analyze a chart

On the RUM summary page, click Analyze with Bits AI on a vital chart or on the error rate chart. Bits Chat summarizes how the metric is trending and what is driving it.

A RUM loading time chart open in inspect mode, with Bits Chat summarizing how the metric trended over the past month.

Ask questions and complete tasks

You can ask Bits Chat about your frontend in plain language from any RUM page, and ask it to complete RUM tasks for you. For example:

  • Which pages in this application have the worst INP right now, and which interactions cause it?
  • Find sessions with 5xx errors on the checkout page in the last hour, grouped by error type. On the RUM Explorer, Bits applies the query for you.
  • Which functions are slowing down my LCP? Ask this on the RUM Profiling page.
  • Create a retention filter that keeps 25% of sessions with errors.
  • Create an operation that tracks checkout from the cart page to the order confirmation page.
