Do not allow users to reuse recent passwords. This can be accomplished by using the
remember
option for the pam_pwhistory
PAM module.
In the file /etc/pam.d/password-auth
, make sure the parameter remember
is
present and it has a value equal to or greater than
24
For example:
password requisite,required pam_pwhistory.so use_authtok remember=24
Preventing re-use of previous passwords helps ensure that a compromised password is not re-used by a user.
The following script can be run on the host to remediate the issue.
#!/bin/bash
# Remediation is applicable only in certain platforms
if rpm --quiet -q pam; then
var_password_pam_remember='24'
var_password_pam_remember_control_flag='requisite,required'
var_password_pam_remember_control_flag="$(echo $var_password_pam_remember_control_flag | cut -d \, -f 1)"

If the system relies on authselect
tool to manage PAM settings, the remediation
will also use authselect
tool. However, if any manual modification was made in
PAM files, the authselect
integrity check will fail and the remediation will be
aborted in order to preserve intentional changes. In this case, an informative message will
be shown in the remediation report.
