Overview

Temporal Cloud is a managed workflow orchestration platform. This integration sends Temporal Cloud billing data to Datadog Cloud Cost Management, so you can attribute spend across your Temporal namespaces and usage types.

What this integration provides

The integration collects daily cost line items from the Temporal Cloud Billing API and submits them to Cloud Cost Management. It attributes costs across the following dimensions:

  • Namespace: the Temporal namespace that generated the cost
  • Service subcategory: the usage type, such as Actions, Active Storage, or Retained Storage
  • Stock keeping unit (SKU): the billable unit and the meter it is measured by

Custom namespace tags are preserved as temporal_tag_<key> tags, so you can group and filter costs by your own labels.

Analyze Temporal Cloud spend in Datadog

After you set up the integration, view your Temporal Cloud costs in Cloud Cost Management. Filter by providername:temporal_cloud to break down spend by namespace, sku, service subcategory, and tag. You can also combine Temporal Cloud costs with your other cloud provider costs in a single view.

Setup

Prerequisites

  • A Temporal Cloud account with the Billing API enabled. The Billing API is in pre-release. Request access from Temporal Cloud support.
  • Datadog Cloud Cost Management enabled.

Create a Temporal Cloud service account and API key

  1. Sign in to Temporal Cloud at https://cloud.temporal.io.
  2. Go to Settings > Service Accounts > Create Service Account.
  3. Set the account role to Finance Admin or Account Owner. (The Metrics Read-Only and Account Admin roles cannot access the Billing API.)
  4. Select Generate API Key, then copy the key. Note that Temporal will not display this key again.

Configure the Temporal Cloud Cost Management integration in Datadog

  1. In Datadog, open the Temporal Cloud Cost Management tile and click Install Integration.
  2. Click Configure, then Add Account.
  3. In the API Key field, enter the service account API key you generated earlier.
  4. Click Save.

Temporal Cloud cost data begins to appear in Cloud Cost Management within 25–30 hours.

Uninstallation

To uninstall the integration, remove the configured account from the Temporal Cloud Cost Management tile in Datadog. Deleting the last account uninstalls the integration and stops cost collection.
