# Grafana Tempo MCP
Integration version1.0.0
## Overview{% #overview %}

The Datadog–Grafana Tempo integration is an MCP-based integration that enables Datadog to securely access a [Grafana Tempo MCP server](https://grafana.com/docs/tempo/latest/api_docs/mcp-server/) instance. Through this integration, the Bits AI SRE agent is granted access to tracing data exposed through the Tempo MCP server.

Note that this integration only supports Grafana Tempo MCP tools. There is a separate Grafana MCP integration that supports other tools like Prometheus metrics and Loki logs.

During the Preview period, Bits AI SRE investigations that include one or more Grafana Tempo tool calls will not be billed.

## Setup{% #setup %}

### Prerequisites{% #prerequisites %}

Your Grafana Tempo MCP instance must be hosted on Grafana Cloud and available from the public internet. See the Grafana instructions for [enabling the MCP in your Tempo configuration](https://grafana.com/docs/tempo/latest/api_docs/mcp-server/#configuration).

### Generate a Grafana Cloud API token{% #generate-a-grafana-cloud-api-token %}

Generate or use an already existing Grafana Cloud API token with the **traces:read** permission.

1. Go to the admin portal and click on the **Details** button on your Tempo stack.
1. Click **Generate now** to create the token in the **Password** field. Also make sure to note your **User** and **URL**.

### Connect your Grafana Tempo MCP account to Datadog{% #connect-your-grafana-tempo-mcp-account-to-datadog %}

1. Add your Grafana instance URL and service account token:
