# RDS instances should be configured to use multiple Availability Zones

## Description{% #description %}

Configure Amazon RDS DB instances with Multi-AZ deployments. In a Multi-AZ deployment, Amazon RDS maintains a synchronous standby in a different Availability Zone and fails over to it automatically during an outage or maintenance.

This rule does not evaluate instances that belong to a DB cluster, including Amazon Aurora, Amazon DocumentDB, Amazon Neptune, and Multi-AZ DB cluster deployments, because their availability is configured on the cluster.

## Remediation{% #remediation %}

Follow the [Modifying a DB instance to be a Multi-AZ DB instance deployment](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.MultiAZSingleStandby.html#Concepts.MultiAZ.Migrating) section of the Amazon RDS User Guide.
