## Overview{% #overview %}

A **variant** represents a specific path between a journey's [start and end events](https://docs.datadoghq.com/journey_monitoring/configuring_journeys.md#define-start-and-end-conditions). Use variants to compare [key performance indicators (KPIs)](https://docs.datadoghq.com/journey_monitoring/details_report.md#traffic-and-conversion-trends) and telemetry data for common paths through the same journey.

## Create a variant{% #create-a-variant %}

Add variants when you create a journey or edit an existing journey:

1. Enter a unique name.
1. Add at least one intermediate [action or view event](https://docs.datadoghq.com/product_analytics/data_collected.md) between the journey's start and end events.
1. Optionally, add [attribute filters](https://docs.datadoghq.com/journey_monitoring/configuring_journeys.md#attribute-filters) to limit the variant to a specific cohort.
1. Save the journey.

The [funnel](https://docs.datadoghq.com/product_analytics/charts/funnel_analysis.md) updates as you add intermediate events. It shows the volume, conversion rate, and average time to convert for each step.

### Suggested variants{% #suggested-variants %}

Datadog analyzes common sequences of intermediate action and view events and suggests variants based on those paths. Suggested variants appear when you create a journey manually, create one from a [suggested journey](https://docs.datadoghq.com/journey_monitoring/suggested_journeys.md), or edit an existing journey.

## Analyze variants{% #analyze-variants %}

Select a variant in the [journey details report](https://docs.datadoghq.com/journey_monitoring/details_report.md) to filter its metrics and telemetry data to that path. Use the filtered data to compare volume, conversion rate, average time to convert, [frontend errors](https://docs.datadoghq.com/error_tracking.md), [RUM operations](https://docs.datadoghq.com/real_user_monitoring/operations_monitoring.md), and [Synthetic test coverage](https://docs.datadoghq.com/journey_monitoring/configuring_journeys.md#step-3-add-synthetic-test-coverage) across paths.

## Delete a variant{% #delete-a-variant %}

In the journey details report, hover over the variant and click the delete icon.
