# AIX

This page covers Agent 7 on AIX. For AIX versions that Agent 7 does not support, see the legacy [Datadog UNIX Agent](https://docs.datadoghq.com/agent/guide/install-unix-agent-aix.md).

## Overview{% #overview %}

The Datadog Agent brings host-level monitoring to IBM AIX (PowerPC 8+) so you can visualize system metrics, enable additional Datadog products, and troubleshoot services that run on-prem.

**Note**: Agent 7 on AIX does not support the following:

- JMX-based integrations
- Cloud Network Monitoring
- Remote Agent configuration and upgrades with Fleet Automation

See [Supported Platforms](https://docs.datadoghq.com/agent/supported_platforms.md?tab=aix) for the complete list of supported AIX versions.

## Installation{% #installation %}

### Prerequisites{% #prerequisites %}

- Root privileges (or sudo) on each host
- Outbound HTTPS (443) to `.datadoghq.com`
- `curl` or `wget`, and `ksh` (shipped on AIX by default)
- Verify your host is running a [supported AIX version](https://docs.datadoghq.com/agent/supported_platforms.md?tab=aix)

### Install the Agent{% #install-the-agent %}

To install the Agent on AIX, follow the [in-app instructions in Fleet Automation](https://app.datadoghq.com/fleet/install-agent/latest?platform=aix), and run the generated script on your hosts.

## Commands{% #commands %}

| Description              | Command                     |
| ------------------------ | --------------------------- |
| Start Agent              | `startsrc -g datadog-agent` |
| Stop Agent               | `stopsrc -g datadog-agent`  |
| Status of Agent services | `lssrc -g datadog-agent`    |
| Agent status page        | `datadog-agent status`      |
| Send flare               | `datadog-agent flare`       |
| Show all commands        | `datadog-agent --help`      |

## Configure the Agent{% #configure-the-agent %}

The [Datadog Agent configuration file](https://docs.datadoghq.com/agent/configuration/agent-configuration-files.md#agent-main-configuration-file) is located in `/etc/datadog-agent/datadog.yaml`. This YAML file holds the host-wide connection details used to send data to Datadog including:

- `api_key`: Your organization's [Datadog API key](https://app.datadoghq.com/organization-settings/api-keys)
- `site`: Target Datadog region (see [Datadog Sites](https://docs.datadoghq.com/getting_started/site.md#access-the-datadog-site))
- `proxy`: HTTP/HTTPS proxy endpoints for outbound traffic (see [Datadog Agent Proxy Configuration](https://docs.datadoghq.com/agent/configuration/proxy.md))
- Default tags, log level, and Datadog configurations

A fully commented reference file, located in `/etc/datadog-agent/datadog.yaml.example`, lists every available option for comparison or to copy and paste.

Alternatively, see the [datadog-agent_aix.yaml.example file](https://github.com/DataDog/datadog-agent/blob/main/pkg/config/example/datadog-agent_aix.yaml.example) for all available configuration options.

### Integration files{% #integration-files %}

Configuration files for integrations exist in `/etc/datadog-agent/conf.d/`. Each integration has its own subdirectory, `<INTEGRATION>.d/`, that contains:

- `conf.yaml`: The active configuration controlling how the integration gathers metrics and logs
- `conf.yaml.example`: A sample illustrating supported keys and defaults

To request support for an integration on AIX, open a feature request with [Datadog Support](https://docs.datadoghq.com/help/).

## Migrate from the UNIX Agent{% #migrate-from-the-unix-agent %}

To migrate from the Datadog UNIX Agent to Agent 7, uninstall the UNIX Agent and then install Agent 7:

1. Back up the UNIX Agent configuration. Uninstalling the UNIX Agent removes the `/etc/datadog-agent` directory.
   ```shell
   cp -rp /etc/datadog-agent /etc/datadog-agent.unix-agent.bak
   ```
1. Uninstall the UNIX Agent:
   ```shell
   installp -u datadog-unix-agent
   ```
1. Install Agent 7.
1. Configure Agent 7 in `/etc/datadog-agent/datadog.yaml`. Use your backup as a reference, but do not copy the file as is:
   - Basic settings like `api_key`, `site`, `hostname`, `tags`, `log_level`, and `proxy.*` keep the same names.
   - Most other options are renamed or removed. Check each option against the [AIX example configuration](https://github.com/DataDog/datadog-agent/blob/main/pkg/config/example/datadog-agent_aix.yaml.example).
   - Do not copy the `dd_url: https://unix.agent.datadoghq.com` setting.
1. Check your integration configurations in `/etc/datadog-agent/conf.d/`. Some options are different in Agent 7.
1. Run `datadog-agent status` to confirm that the Agent is running and sending data.

If you have questions about migrating your configuration, contact [Datadog Support](https://docs.datadoghq.com/help/).

## Monitor Agent uptime{% #monitor-agent-uptime %}

You can use the metric `datadog.agent.running` to monitor the uptime of an Agent. The metric emits a value of `1` if the Agent is reporting to Datadog.

## Uninstall the Agent{% #uninstall-the-agent %}

To remove an installed Agent, run the following `installp` command:

```shell
installp -u datadog-agent
```

Uninstalling the Agent removes the Agent services and the boot entry.
